Obituary for Betty J. Pinnick (Frey)

Betty Jean Pinnick was born December 23, 1923 on the Billings Bench and moved shortly thereafter to the farm near Shepherd, MT. Her parents, Tina Wilken and Henry Frey, were homesteaders in Hoskins Basin north of Billings. She died February 29, 2020 at age 96. She met Roy Pinnick at a dance in Shepherd and they married in 1939. In 1945, after a short stay in San Francisco during WW2 when Roy was in the US Navy, they bought a small home on Lincoln Lane in Billings Heights and were fortunate to live into their nineties at home.
Betty was a dedicated homemaker and together they raised six children; Larry of Lewistown, MT; Ron of Las Cruces, NM; LaVonne “Vonnie” Anderson, Roger (Mary), David (Lynne), of Billings; and Pamela (Mike) Mahoney of Crested Butte, CO; 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
In their early marriage they raised dairy cows, sold milk, and had pigs, chickens, and horses. Hard work, integrity, frugality, honesty, and a strong Christian faith kept vitality in their lives. They volunteered to work at Clydehurst Christian Ranch on the Boulder River for several years. Missionaries on leave enjoyed the marvelous meals Betty prepared.
Many families enjoyed and canned off the huge garden they raised and have fond memories of pickup loads of corn arriving for massive husking, blanching, and cutting for freezing for winter. Dill pickles, sweet pickles, red beets, cherries, apple sauce, green tomato mincemeat, peaches, and apricots for canning were all family endeavors Betty loved. Roy was an avid fisherman and hunter so in the fall the garage was abuzz with meat cutting and wrapping. Delicious food and hard work were important aspects of the Pinnick home. Betty helped instill these life-giving skills in her children and grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her beloved husband Roy in 2013; daughter-in-law Judy, wife of son Ron; grandchild Cole as well as her siblings Ethel McDermott, Elsie Jansma, Herman Frey and Harold “Tuffy” Frey.
Betty’s family wishes to thank all of Betty’s wonderful caregivers at Aspen Meadows, Riverstone Hospice, and Compassus Hospice. Betty’s memorial service will be held Thursday, March 5th at 10 am at Hope Center Church at 425 So. 28th St. in Billings. The burial will be at 2 pm at Yellowstone National Cemetery, Laurel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hope Center Four Square Church, Riverstone Hospice, or Compassus Hospice.
Thank you, Mom.
